Now I am fifty years old, with my hair turning grey and my face etched with the signs of age. As I reflect on the past forty-nine years, I realize that reminiscencing about my life brings no further benefit.
In my youth, I was lazy and neglected my studies, without any clear ambitions or strategies to make progress in my later years. Despite opportunities to make wise investments, I never thought to compete for trifles, nor did I appreciate the hard work of farming through the ages. My native garden has become overgrown with weeds, and my solitary life has been like that of a recluse who lives on the periphery of society, catching fish and cutting wood.
I have been like a tree that is useless to society, lost in the mundane world, as time passes like a fleeting shadow. My teeth are falling out, my muscles are weakening, and my vision is blurred by the bright colors around me. However, my mother is still strong at seventy years old, with four more years to go before reaching her eighth decade. She enjoys good health and happiness in her daily life.
My eldest child has not yet achieved any notable success, while my youngest is still young and immature. Despite being separated from my younger siblings, we remain in touch and miss each other often. My young grandchildren are ignorant of sorrow and play with abandon, scattered books and writing tools at their feet.
Eighty-nine percent of things in life are not as we wish them to be, leading to a buildup of worries and sadness. Despite this, I dare not be mocked by those who are frivolous or skilled at manipulation, as I hold fast to my integrity and unwavering principles. If I were to indulge in excessive drinking or violent behavior like gambling, I would never find happiness in the simplicity of living in poverty and contentment with less.
I would never abandon my family in times of need, weeping alone under a cow's clothing or living in poverty in a cold room. A true man faces such challenges without complaint, so why should I bemoan my fate? Fate and success are in the hands of Heaven; I rise with a song, looking out at the vastness of the sea and realizing that life's journey is fleeting.
As the year ends and the cold autumn winds blow, the vitality of the forests diminishes and the enduring strength of the pine and cypress become more evident. Reflecting on my own life cycle brings humility before the mother's love that I have yet to fully repay despite life's obstacles. Drunk with alcohol to drown my sorrows, I return to my humble home and shut out the world beyond these doors.
